The Civil War was alive when I was growing up in rural Virginia.  A hundred years had passed, but its ripples still lapped the edges of a painful collective memory.  I was told that at least one of my great-grandfathers had served—although no one knew much more than that.

I always thought that their experiences would have been mine had I been alive at the time—indeed, with respect to shaping who I am today, theirs was my experience.  I’ve discovered much by researching them.  Their stories covered it all—the chaotic terror of combat, the interminable boredom of camp, and the twin gothic nightmares of hospital and prison.
